| Liz was originally qualified as an RGN at University
College Hospital in 1976. She worked as a nurse at the National
Temperance and the Putney Hospital's. In 1978, Liz moved to Queen
Mary's hospital and trained in Occupational Health. She worked in
this area for six years before taking a break to have a family.
She returned to work at Queen Mary's Hospital. In 1994, Liz began
to be involved specifically in the changes needed to introduce safe
patient handling. At the beginning of 1995, she was appointed as
part time Back Care Co-ordinator. In this role her activities included:-
- Launching the Richmond Twickenham and Roehampton Trust's Manual
Handling Policy.
- Responsiblity for planning and co-ordination of the training
of key trainers.
- Setting up and running a programme of handling and movement
training for health care assistants.
- As a member of the manual handling working party she was responsible
for ongoing monitoring of the policy.
- Devising a pilot patient assessment form and trained ward staff
in its use.
- Carrying out audits of handling equipment in the hospital.
- Carrying out risk assessments of specific patient's handling
needs.
Liz is now a DFH Consultant. Her main activities are
the provision of training and consultancy in the handling and safe
movement of patients and other loads in the health services. She
also provides training in all other areas of occupational health
nursing.
