Handling Skill Sessions include
- Using sliding systems to move patients.
- Hoists and other mechanical equipment to help you move your
patients
- Safe handling of other loads (furniture, boxes, bags, oxygen
cylinders and anything else.)
- Effective Rehabilitation planning
- Handling babies and small children
- Toiletting / Bathing clients
- Getting people in and out of vehicles
- Handling in emergencies and planning for emergencies (Is it
really an emergency?)
- Handling in theatres / X-Ray Departments
- Getting people off the floor
- Group work problem solving exercises
The handling skill sessions cover all of the areas required by
the proposed UK wide NHS Manual Handling Training Passport &
Information Scheme.
Handling sessions consider handling needs in the community and
in residential and nursing homes as well as in hospital and anywhere
else where people handle people
Equipment used in handling skill sessions
The practical handling skill sessions make use of a wide variety
of equipment. In addition the course has access to the full range
of equipment held by the Disabled Living Foundation in its showrooms.
Equipment used in training includes
- At least three makes of mobile hoists
- Overhead hoisting systems
- At least two types of Standaid Hoists
- A variety of beds and mattresses to reduce the need for patient
handling.
- Fabric slides for sitting and supine patient handling
- Transfer boards for seated transfers
- Lateral transfer systems for bed to bed and bed to trolley
transfers
- Inflatable systems for positioning patients in bed
- Systems for lifting patients from the floor.
- Three completely different pieces of equipment to help to turn
a patient in bed
- A variety of standing turners
- A variety of wheelchairs
